Wow!....it worked! Thanks you SO much Ed!....I'm going to update right now.....(after backing up everything else FIRST!) I'm assuming that just backing up "home" and "etc" would be enough to ensure all my settings get transferred properly?.....well I'm off!!

You seem to be trying to run preupgrade from run level 3?  You aren't in a GUI
setting, so you need to run preupgrade-cli.
