It could be just broken hardware, mine was like that, but I found out
too late to do anything about it (I never used it, at first).

Mine's a completely different laptop, but the situation is similar.  My
microphone output is low in audio, with a lot of noise, and with a
significant DC offset.  Increasing the gain doesn't help with the audio,
enough, and the added noise makes it even worse.  Plus, the DC offset
gets amplified with the gain increase, to the point where the signal
becomes rapidly unusable, anyway.
