I thought there were some pretty big differences? E.g. jbd/jbd2, dellaloc improvements only in ext4, metadata performance improvements etc. Just looking at balloc.c in git I see ~2500 changed lines. Or is the ext4 code able to mount ext3 now (I didn't think so)?
