My problem was the other way .... I knew I hadn't changed anything on enough machines that I succumbed to the "suspect everything" syndrome.

I'm grateful for your "ssh self" on the XP Cygwin box as that would have saved alot of noise on the Fedora side and I have made a big note of that in my installation instruction.

I also thank you for your additional explanations as they do help give me a better understanding of how I should be looking at the problem.
