It probably will take longer than a weekend to try out a few different
non-Gnome desktops, to see which you prefer, and to work out how to use
them.  Particularly when you wanted Gnome 2, want to find something
close to it, and want a customised desktop rather than just go with the
defaults.

Changing desktops isn't a minor cosmetic thing, it changes quite a lot
of the operation and how you use the computer, hence the furore about
the radical stop Gnome has taken.
