Did you search the list archives (or Google)? This has been discussed extensively before now. The basic reason is that an iPhone is not a memory device that can just be mounted like a pen drive. It needs a special protocol for access. Try running Rythmbox and then inserting the phone. IIRC it can access some functions, though not all.
