Noobs and people who only look at e-mail and surf the web will use Gnome3, since it "looks the same" and "works the same" as their favorite smartphone. Gnome3 provides a desktop for that vast majority of ignorant people who want a zero-slope learning curve between the smartphone, TV, computer, car and microwave oven.
