Though, in my case the brightness keys stopped working in xfce. Specifically, pkexec was complaining that it couldn't find my $SHELL in system shells. Still, I'd expect the list of available shells in s-c-u to be read from /etc/shells directly, so the bug you're seeing seems to be caused by bash update as well.
