I updated the symbolic link to /etc/alternatives/java_sdk now points to
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64, and now the 389-console
GUI comes up. So that was the issue. Not sure why it didn't get updated
properly, but such is Linux some times. :-)

ls -l /etc/alternatives/java_sdk
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 46 Oct 14 13:16 /etc/alternatives/java_sdk ->
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0.x86_64

It's a mystery to me too.

I had to do "update-alternatives --java" as root and it showed 1.6.0.
update-alternatives --jre didn't show anything. Changing it to the 1.4.2
entry then back had no effect.
ls -al /usr/lib/jvm # this will be a symlink, usually
ls -al symlink # this will be another symlink
ls -al anothersymlink

also
alternatives --display java
alternatives --display javac
alternatives --display jre_openjdk
alternatives --display jre_1.6.0
alternatives --display java_sdk_openjdk
alternatives --display java_sdk_1.6.0

also try
alternatives --auto java

Based on the output above, I'm assuming I have to update that somehow?
Yes, although I'm not sure why alternatives --config shows java 1.6.0
Try
alternatives --config jre
also

If that still doesn't work, try doing
alternatives --config java and --config jre
to change it to the gcj one, then change it back to the correct java 1.6.0
problem

???
if you run 389-console -D 9 without the -f console.log arguments, does it
output debug information to the terminal window?

We are running a 64-bit CentOS that used to be on 5.4, but a few days ago

Any ideas on how to fix this?
java -version
alternatives --config java

java -version shows:
java version "1.6.0_20"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.9.8)
(rhel-1.22.1.9.8.el5_6-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 19.0-b09, mixed mode)

update-alternatives shows:
update-alternatives --config java

There are 2 programs which provide 'java'.

Selection Command
-----------------------------------------------
1 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-gcj/bin/java
*+ 2 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64/bin/java

Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:

So it is already configured to use 1.6.0, and 389-console still blows up
as above. Ideas?
389-console -D 9 -f console.log - edit console.log to remove any sensitive
info - paste to list
