When I was using Gnome 2 and Gnome 3, the media keys on my Logitech keyboard "just worked" with Rhythmbox. I've actually worn through the top of the pause/play button.
Now that I'm using XFCE, the media buttons don't work. When I look at the keyboard configuration dialogs, it seems that XFCE is set to use keyboard shortcuts as program launchers. Google offers many, many discussions and no good resolution.
