I haven't been able to get my older systems to boot the install CD's since
F9. Similarly only older versions of the KNOPPIX live cd will boot (4.0.2).
Your mileage may vary.
If I remember correctly, the cdrom preceeded the hard disk in the boot order
on Compaqs of that vintage.
