Thanks for reply. As mentioned before, I am only using telnet for 
testing as ssh / scp is far better. And I am trying to do this in the 
simplest of cases ... one machine telnets to the other just to prove I 
can make a connection (as in understanding iptables et al to be able to 
then solve more useful problems, like mail / mailx ... which may prove 
to be less acceptable than scp after I can test drive).
