a.out is the default name of the executable file that's created by  C compilers
on Unix systems when a filename is not specifically requested on the
commandline.

Therefore, it's common for programmers to create executables names a.out when
writing test programs and stubs simply because it requires less typing than
specifying a filename for the executable.
