HDMI support already exists for r600/r700 based cards. The following commit seems relevant: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=805c22168da76a65c978017d0fe0d59cd048e995 It indicates that audio is disabled by default because of problems on some systems.
