OK, I used the big hammer and changed the definition of the Adwaita theme, editing the files /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-3.0/settings.ini /usr/share/themes/Adwaita/gtk-2.0/gtkrc to modify the selected bg color attribute in both.
