If I want to shut my laptop down I don't want to wait while logging out and then shut it down. In fact, if I want to shut anything down I'd rather not wait while I log out. Fortunately the Alt menu is there, but I'm always surprised when Gnome claim to be trying to make things more intuitive and then hide basic functionality behind secret keystrokes or options that can only be changed through the configuration database.
