Sorry, forgot to mention. I tried that and hence my confusion. It
refuses to identify an audio CD or even a data CD! As if its completely
dead. I looked at the permissions and it looked reasonable too.

$ ls -l /dev/sr0 
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Jan 12 14:22 /dev/sr0
