I think you missed Joe's useful post, which tells you how to check that metacity is the Window Manager that gnome will launch when you login - which is really what you are looking for: > Try this: open the Gnome Configuration Editor and navigate to > /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager and change the current window > manager to metacity.
