I guess I never fully understood what it did - I somehow had the idea it was involved in detection of hardware - apparently, I had that somewhat wrong. This, from the fedoraproject.org/wiki/Anaconda page is what I remembered: "During installation, a target computer's hardware is identified and configured and the appropriate file systems for the system's architecture are created."
