house or apartment building to be up to code there must be no more than
6' between wall outlets and that goes for every room, even rooms that
are only intended for storage, or other uses that don't normally need an
electrical connection. I don't know what the rule is back in California
where I used to live, but whatever it was it didn't require that many
outlets.
Wish it were like that here, extension cords are unavoidable, because
the sockets are never where you want them. We're lucky that all
extension cords and multi-way power boards are 10 amps (ignoring the
Chinese made ones that lie about their specs), with 10 amps being the
max you're allowed to draw from an outlet, anyway.
I've seen other countries where you can buy low amperage extension
cords, then the customer plugs in a high current drawing device and
melts the cable or causes a fire.
I vaguely remember that in the UK they would sell you an appliance with no
power plug on it, just a power cable with three wires protruding. You were
supposed to get the plug yourself and have it attached. I never understood
the logic behind this. Is it still on?
