If the developers somehow believe that vertical tabs are the answer, it is because to the developer the entire world is a phone in portrait mode...
There have been so many GUI screw-ups/mis-designs(by MS and everyone else) because of this same thinking where some "smart" developer things that the whole world is a phone and/or a touch screen and completely optimizes everything using that false assumption. My firefox keeps asking me to try vertical tabs.
