I'm tired of fighting with plugins to make toslink work on my "didn't
pay for dolby" motherboard, or having my hdmi audio treated like
video.

Is there an audio solution that has the following?

* 5.1 support no matter the source (i.e. not just passthrough for movies)

* TOSlink or HDMI output that actually supports 5.1 (most TOSlink
devices only support stereo or passthrough)

* Doesn't involve any video signals or devices, or pretend to be a
monitor (so no splitters/injectors or usb c to video)

* No special drivers. I want a hardware solution that "just works",
  not a dependency nightmare.

* I don't need fancy features, my receiver already has those ;-)

I've done this before on an old motherboard that didn't disable the
TOSlink surround. This motherboard, it just doesn't work, even under
Windows. I'm currently using the spare HDMI port on my nvidia card
but that turns my audio-only receiver into a display, and actions that
reconfigure my real displays can break audio.

Thanks!
DJ
