You may want to consider porting your cron tasks to systemd timers.
I did this in my work life and for my home lab.

I find the systemd timers an improvement and like that the system journal
keeps all the logs about what the tasks clear to log and details of failures 
when they happen.

Clearly this is not a solution to your mail setup problems.
