I cannot recommend strongly enough _against_ automated and
unattended firmware updates, especially for critical components such
as storage devices.
We are at a major shift in the linux user base -- many new users who
have never used a command-line will never get updates with fwupdmgr.
For workstations, the major vendors appear to be looking for big
deployments to cubicle farms where updates are tested by IT against
cubicle farm systems.
I suspect the future will have more issues from failure to
install updates than from updates with bugs.
I think Gnome software has or is getting the ability to handle firmware
updates.
