For that, and getting into BIOS, I used to madly hammer away at the
keys while the thing was powering up.  Some only give you a small
window of opportunity, which could be even worse with a USB keyboard
(some motherboards activate USB keyboard decoding quite late, some
USB keyboards need to bootup).

Any motherboard which gave me an option to add a small delay before
booting the main drive, I always set it for a second or two.
