The progress indicator is provided by Plymouth, just like the normal
bootup. You can use ESC to switch between the text output and graphical
view. ESC is generally safe. It's CTRL-C that can interrupt things.
But I don't think there's anything you can do to interrupt the upgrade
(or bootup in general) other than doing CTRL-ALT-DEL.
