Dell's spec sheet says that the screen's resolution 1920x1080 with an aspect 
ratio of 16:9. But when I tried setting it to that, the setting wouldn't expand 
to the full width of the screen.

Finally, I tried using a different desktop - GNOME. 

When I checked the display settings it said 3840x2160 and scaled 250% (the 
latter didn't make any sense). 

When I went back into XFCE, I set the display to 3840x2160 and scaled it by .5 
(custom). That seems to be correct.
