One of the things I like about doing command line system updates (and
I don't know if the *current* GUI based systems do this), was I could
see comments being logged in its progress about old/new conf files. I,
then, knew to go looking for things to maintain, without having to rely
on some other tool to inform me.

A simple moving start-to-finish progress bar isn't very helpful.
