My "gut reaction" is that this may not do what you want, though I could easily be mistaken. The USB /boot/efi can be updated to point to the USB /boot, but then do you want to boot an initram off the the USB key or the disk? If you boot initram off the USB, is your userland on the disk still compatible? FWIW I just use the server netinstall for repairs, although it is rare for me to need to do so.
