Just to note: boot-time grubenv modification is used for more than boot
success/fail detection.  Setting a default boot option during boot and
setting a boot-once option (at least) also use it.  So any solution to
using btrfs needs to handle "modify grubenv", not just the specific case
of "hidden boot menu".
