Many years ago I had to put up with that (different hardware now). 
But, I didn't hide the textual boot progress messages, so I could see
what I was waiting for.  I don't recall if I got progress info as it
compiled, or I could just see that the stall was due to a compile being
started.

Also, back then, we didn't have parallel boot processes, so the system
did wait for it to finish before carrying on.
