Very occasionally my Brother all-in-one needs to be prodded with an
avahi command. My notes say:

   Use 'sudo avahi-browse -a -t' to check that
   printer, scanner etc. are all visible. Use
   DNS-SD (Avahi) versions of drivers.
   
I used to use the proprietary driver from Brother but dropped it over a
year ago and haven't looked back.
