Shrink is I/O intensive and has a much higher probability of revealing any weaknesses in hardware or software than normal operations where weaknesses may remain undiscovered for a long time. Also note that running a filesystem with too little free space slows down file operations and also increases the probability that weaknesses will be revealed.
