That works (much of the time) during shutdown, too.  But often it takes a while 
for the logging to start showing up.  And occasionally, no logging shows up.  
So it would be better if the logging showed up automatically, by default.  Then 
hitting the Esc could be used to turn it off.

By the time I realize something seems to be wrong during shutdown, it's already 
too late to hit the Esc to turn on shutdown logging.
