sync ; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
This isn't a "shortcut" and has nothing to do with diff itself. This is a
normal operating system function to make things work much better. There's a reason there
are caches.
I understand. Thank-you for the clarifications and reminders. I do know the
value of cache, but this is one situation where it can occasionally do more
harm than good.
