While it's mostly taken as read that buffering will use RAM, it's not
that clear about caching, but I found this (below) after doing a google
search for:  smplayer cache in ram or disc

Though I wouldn't be surprised at a small temp file appearing somewhere
if you'd clicked on M3U playlist, for instance (the temp file being the
address of the actual streaming data).

I think that, in most cases, to listen to a live stream you're only
buffering a few seconds worth.  Unless you're using a player which
deliberately buffers a large amount so that you can rewind and repeat
something.
