that they can have issues.

Way out of my knowledge zone, but I'll speculate.

Is it possible there is a screen or power saver running, and sometimes
it hasn't kicked in, and sometimes it has?  Is there anything
different in journalctl -r when this happens, and when it doesn't
happen?  Maybe this is what you mean by system log?

Have you tried switching to a virtual console (say Ctrl-Alt-F3), and
then back again (Ctrl-Alt-F1)?  I think that does a context switch, so
should give something a kick.
