If you're doing custom partitioning, you have to link the EFI partition
to /boot/efi yourself. If you don't have an EFI partition, then your
previous install was done in legacy mode and you'll have to either use
that again or you'll have to create an EFI partition. But that will
probably require converting the disk to GPT partitioning which will
require reformatting everything.
