I can't say I've noticed that, but I haven't installed lots of fonts
recently.  It's many years since I went on a font binge.  I can think
of a few things:

The top of the list shows recently used fonts, so you can quickly find
them without trawling the entire list.

You may have installed the same font more than once (e.g. a system
installation, and a local-user installation), and maybe it hasn't
handled that well.

You could have different versions of the same font (e.g. there's a TTF
and a postscript version of a font with the same name).
