In general, you do not create partitions before running the installer. The installer creates the partitions it's going to use from the free space on the drive. If it sees pre-existing partitions, they're not considered free space. If you are installing Linux as the one and only thing on a hard drive, either give it a blank unpartitioned drive, or let the installer use the entire drive you select. Looking at your first message you have two drives: Windows already on /dev/sda Linux to go on /dev/sdb Let the installer use the inter /dev/sdb drive. You don't have to prepare it first, although you can erase existing partitions on it if you want to.
