Firefox uses a lot of RAM if you have a lot of windows/tabs open. Another way to see how much memory FF is using is to do an about:performance in the URL field.
A bare minimum hardware spec for me these days is 16GB of RAM. I purchased a laptop this summer and bumped that to 32 GB. My desktop machine has 64 GB. I am a heavy user of FF.
