It could be that *your* modem and/or router doesn't need power cycling, in general, but that it randomly goofed and needed it this time. You can test that. Unplug its data leads, leave it powered up. Some time later, repatch it, and see if things just work. It may also depend on things like; do you leave your modem always powered?
