OK.

FWIW, I'm happy with the way my systems are configured.  And they don't give me any trouble. So, not so sure how much more brain "power" I'll give this. Considering I need to prepare our balcony for the approaching typhoon.  Don't want any identifiable items to crash onto someone's
head below.  :-)

Well, I've reached pretty much my limtis as well. As promised I built a simple package:

Name: testpkg
Version: 1
Release:        1%{?dist}
Summary: testpkg
License: GPL
%description
Test package

%prep

%build

%install
rm -rf $RPM_BUILD_ROOT
mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc

echo "%{VERSION}" >$RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/testpkg

%files

%verify(not md5 size mtime) %config(noreplace) /etc/testpkg

I built versions 1 and 2 of this, intalled version 1, replaced /etc/testpkg with a random symlink, then upgraded to version 2. The symlink was preserved and was not overwritten by an updated "configuration" file.

This leaves two possibilities: authselect doesn't get executed, in some particular sequence of events when installing off a Live image; or perhaps a problem with authselect's triggers.
