Well, I've reached pretty much my limtis as well. As promised I built a simple package:

mkdir -p $RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc
echo "%{VERSION}" >$RPM_BUILD_ROOT/etc/testpkg

%verify(not md5 size mtime) %config(noreplace) /etc/testpkg
I built versions 1 and 2 of this, intalled version 1, replaced /etc/testpkg
with a random symlink, then upgraded to version 2. The symlink was preserved
and was not overwritten by an updated "configuration" file.
This leaves two possibilities: authselect doesn't get executed, in some particular sequence of events when installing off a Live image; or perhaps a problem with authselect's triggers.
