Sometimes my printer enters into a "Paused" state, and this is how I fix it:
In a browser window address bar: localhost:631 CUPs appears. Select "Administration" from the top menu bar Click the button for "Manage Printers" Select the affected printer It should display the printer status, in my case: "Officejet (Paused, Accepting Jobs, Not Shared)" Select the "Maintenance" drop down and click "Resume Printer" You may be asked to login with a user with sufficient privileges, yourself or root. if it's a good day, it should say "Printer OfficeJet has been resumed."
