Thanks, Patrick! True, but I want my e-mail stored and acted upon locally. In 
that case, I do not completely see a way out of my situation, though there are 
likely alternative approaches to the same problem.

I run my own mail server, so all the emails are in my house which is local enough. I access my email from many devices, so this keeps them all in sync. dovecot does some initial email sorting for me and all the devices download the emails so they're available offline if necessary.
