echo $DISPLAY

and did you su - or sudo and/or ssh to someplace (even the local
machines) without a -X or -Y ?

if you want to verify it is a display setting/permission problem and
not a gnome specific issue try "xterm" and see if it also says cannot
open display and/or connection refused.
