Actually, doesn't one have to be a bit more careful with the pattern?

Notice what the status is for wlp4s0.

[egreshko@meimei ~]$ if nmcli device status | grep wlp4s0 | grep connected > 
/dev/null; then echo connected; else echo not connected; fi
connected
