I have pavcontrol set to 40%~45% and it sounds fine.  Well, except for the fact 
that the laptop is old and the mic
is "substandard" and not well isolated as it picks up fan vibrations.

I now have the mic set to the proper setting in pavuontrol, but when I test it in audacity, I see no evidence that it's being picked up and trying to play back what I "recorded" gives nothing but silence.
