Samuel's suggestion to

did work.

I'm not sure now whether what I called an "error message" really is an error message or just letting me know the install did something.  I see the file's date now matches the date that zoom released the version that I just installed:
bash.1[~]: cd /usr/share/mime/packages/
bash.2[packages]: ls -l blender.xml
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 277 Apr 12 00:41 blender.xml
bash.3[packages]:
So the blender.xml file was changed (or a new one was installed).  I do see the "http" vs. "https" difference:
bash.3[packages]: cat blender.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<mime-info xmlns="https://www.freedesktop.org/standards/shared-mime-info";>
    <mime-type type="application/x-blender">
        <comment xml:lang="en">Blender Scene</comment>
        <glob pattern="*.blend" />
  </mime-type>
</mime-info>
bash.4[packages]:
I hope that doesn't matter.

I don't know of a way to test the install until tomorrow evening when I try a meeting with a distant friend.  So I've gone ahead and tagged this thread "SOLVED".  Y'all are free to continue discussion anyway; I will continue watching.

I thank everyone who tried to help.
Bill.
