MOZ_DISABLE_WAYLAND=1 firefox
This test allowed Firefox to work properly, I have detachable tabs and the dropdowns working again.  So now we think we know what is causing the problem, the question now is how to fix it?

In my case I've simply chosen the default Gnome installation and I have never looked into differences between GNOME-wayland or GNOME-Xorg.  If it matters this machine has been upgraded from previous versions of Fedora, starting from 25 to 31 without skipping any interim versions.

Thanks, Jeff
